Please be sure to check out the Flute and Clarinet resources page as well, because I will be adding to that on an ongoing basis.
For this week, I have asked the students to practice page 4 in their book, as well as the first side of handout A that I gave them last week.
Practice Tips:
It is important to practice every day, even if it is just for a short time. I know it is hard to put together 20 minutes at one stretch in the beginning, especially for flutes, so sometimes breaking it up into 10 minute intervals before and after homework can help to reduce frustration.
Flutes, be sure to spend some time just with the head joint by itself to practice blowing and embouchure. Using a mirror to check yourself and compare to the pictures on the Flute and Clarinet Resources page can be helpful so that you can see how straight you are and to see how small of an opening you can make for your air.
Clarinets, focus on keeping your checks from puffing out to the sides when you blow on your instrument. For a reminder about proper clarinet embouchure, visit the Flute and Clarinet Resources page to watch the video that shows where to put your teeth on your instrument, and how to hold in your cheeks and firm up your chin. Using a mirror sometimes can also be helpful for you, so that you can see how your embouchure (mouth position) compares to others on the video.
Good luck! Have fun! And be sure to write down what you have practiced on your practice sheet.
See you Thursday!
